Curtin Department of Applied Geology

Honours Degrees

We offer three honours courses that combine specialist coursework with supervised research and involve one year of full-time study, or two years if taken part-time. Entry requires an undergraduate degree in geology with average grades of 65% - see Course Admission.

We particularly encourage graduates of other universities to apply and take advantage of our strong links with the West Australian resources industry - see Why Study at Curtin?

Honours students develop Technical Skills by taking specialist units on topics like structural geology, petroleum geology, geophysics, hydrogeology, or environmental geochemistry, and can also take courses offered in the National Minerals Geoscience Honours Program.

They also develop Research Skills by completing a supervised research project, often in collaboration with industry partners. Project results are compiled as a dissertation of around 100 pages in length - see our list of Honours Graduates for examples of project topics.

Finally, they also develop Professional Skills like time management, report preparation and seminar presentation - our honours courses are all recognised by the Australasian Institute of Mining Metallurgy as providing outstanding training for the resources industry.
